Transalpine Snowshoe Week: My first time snowshoeing - it won't be my last!

A fab week snowshoeing in the Southern Alps where we had a *lot* of snow - our trip coincided with The Beast from the East - and although this meant we didn't get all the advertised views and snow conditions curtailed our routes somewhat, we still got out and about and had an amazing time - ploughing our way through larch forests knee deep in snow, being dazzled by the pristine white landscape of peaks and plateaus and the sparkling alpine scenery, tobogganing down hillsides and crossing sunken streams. Our guide, Yves, was fantastic: amazingly knowledgeable and great company too - he really made the trip.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The day we spent on a figure of eight around the Rifugio Capanna Mautino was just magical - Costa la Luna and Cima Saurel in the morning, and up to the Col Begino in the afternoon.

What did you think of your group leader?

One of the best I've ever met.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

If you think it's going to get cold, take a thermos or water bottle that can handle boiling water - that way you can take a warm drink with you when you're out snowshoeing. Waterproof trousers make for great DIY tobogganing! Check your insurance before you go - it turned out mine did consider snowshoeing to be winter sports cover, even though it wasn't listed. Luckily I discovered that before the trip (not that I needed it!) We were able to get lunch at the rifugio in Thures on our arrival day, and at the small hotel in Cervières on our last day. YR.no has weather forecasts for Thures (Thures Gorlier) and Cervières (Cervières, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur)
