This is a bit of a long journey for the short holiday, but it is totally worth it! The game drives were phenomenal. I never expected to get this close to the big cats!
I am planning to go back for more!
The only downside was that I was the only guest at the camp at the time. There are 17 tents and I thought I would find like minded people to share the experience with over dinner and drinks... But no. .. Staff at the camp were fabulous and made me feel extremely welcome. They even moved a table outside for me so that I could enjoy the company of the local birds, that literally sat on my table while I had lunch. But it would have been a better experience if there had been other travellers around the fire pit ( which was not lit because I was on my own) and to share drinks with on the amazing viewing platform.
I would encourage people to do the trip at this time of year! Long days, more time with the big cats ( I believe there are many vehicles queuing for a 'photo shoot' at other times of the year), cute Cubs... What's not to like. I want to go back for the great migration, but I know for certain that this time of year offers many other attractions in the less busy Maasai Mara.
The flights/transfers were well organised and I even had the same taxi driver driving me through Nairobi at the time of arrival and departure.
There was a long stay in Nairobi after flying back from the Mara until the flight left for the UK and the taxi driver even offered options like shopping or a meal at a restaurant before going to the airport. I did not take him up on that, but really appreciated the offer!
If you are wondering whether it is 'worth it' for those few days....it REALLY is...go for it, book it! And enjoy! I know I did!
Seeing a lioness and a cheetah with Cubs on the way from the little airport to the camp!
There was no group leader
No... But I absolutely loved the trip!
Short but very good trip
HArd to choose between a very playful bay elephant and 4 cheetah cubs.
After so many other safari's this was by far the best. Accommodation at Talek Gate was perfect and Charles the camp manager extremely hospitable. We saw everything thanks to Amos our tour guide and had a fantastic time. Lions, Leopards, Cheetah, Giraffe and Rhino and every animal had young. Breathtaking scenary and connection to life!
Apart from the sunrise and sunset I think there was 3 moments: seeing a mother leopard and cub dismount a tree and watch us, having lion cubs stalk us and a giraffe and a cheetah and cub using our jeep for shade and as a toy

We had an amazing guide called Amos - with 8 years training he had huge knowledge re every animal and bird, an uncanny ability to know where the animals were and a passion that rivalled our which meant we spent almost he entire day and into the evening out with the animals.
Wildebeest Migration means food is plentiful and combined with the birthing season made for a wonderful experience.
Lightweight clothing for the day time, as the sun can be quite strong. Bring warmer layers for the cooler evenings and early mornings, when temperatures can drop surprisingly due to the altitude a lot of Kenya sits at.

Just taking Sterling cash will be fine, and there is no need to change in US dollars. The local currency is the Kenyan Schilling, and you will be changing your money into this and spending with schillings only. Some services will accept dollars as payment, but it is not legal tender. It is best to change money at the airport in Nairobi and ATM machines are availabile there as well. Credit Cards are accepted at most points on the trips if you get stuck as well!
