Trekking Highlights of Cuba (2017)

So interesting.....

I tend to choose my long haul trekking holidays for the cultural experience as much as the walking. Cuba certainly delivered. It challenged pre-conceptions at every turn whilst being totally delightful. Music, food, architecture and people are a joy. Politics and history are fascinating.

Festivals & Villages of Ladakh

Ladakh: Festivals and viliages

5
This was my first visit to Ladakh and it didn't disappoint. Leh was a joy to wander round and quieter with it being the winter time. The Tikse Festival was a true spectacle. But it was the scenery and remote villages that I loved the best. The people still live to the rhythm of the seasons, and subsistence farming is still the norm. It was brilliant to see that the women of the villages are earning their own money, whether it is from felting items to sell to the tourists, or running their own village eco cafes in the summer.

Trekking Highlights of Cuba (2017)

Trekking highlights of Cuba

Good holiday for anyone wanting to see lots of different areas of Cuba. Quite a lot of internal travelling involved but worth it to see so much of the country. Combines mountains with small towns, rural life with city. Worth staying a few extra days in La Habanna at the end of trip and making it out to the beach independently. Despite rumours to the contrary, the food is great. Sierra Maestra is the best trekking but this is not really a trekking holiday. Most of the walks are short enough - if tiring due to the humidity and occasional steep ascent. Glad to report no major insect bite issues - sufferers like me will always need the antihistamines handy, but needed just for occassional bites rather than mass attacks on this holiday. Take the advice on bringing cash - my card was declined even when I found an atm. And best to relax into the culture - queueing is a way of life and food on offer is whatever's available not what's written on the menu. Prepare to be managed - independent forays off to the side are possible but require a relaxed mindset - just as well you're on holiday and not in a hurry.

Snowshoeing in the Catalan Pyrenees

Snowshoeing Catalan Pyrenees

This was my third time snowshoeing and was a fantastic trip- really interesting, wild and beautiful places, helped by great weather and plenty of snow. Everyone we met in all three hotels, the taxi drivers and the hosts of the additional activities were very hospitable and friendly and the food was very good quality throughout. With so much included (wine with the meals, all the transport and additional local wine brought by Miguel for the cheese tasting) the trip was really good value.

A fantastic week of snowshoeing. Awesome in the true sense of the word! Awesome hotel, awesome views, awesome walks and awesome guide Sara! We were lucky to arrive after a decent snow fall so we had 5 days snowshoeing in pristine snow with beautiful clear blue skies.

Fabulous trip, well organised with a huge variety of places. We were well looked after by our gracious guide, Bop, his love of his home country was shared with intelligence and humour. It was a gruelling agenda, and would only recommend for fit people. We were a great group of 15, which gave us space to sleep on route in the bus, which we needed, many morning leaving our hotel at 7am. Last night at 2am.....
