Excellent organisation and hotel. great food
Tiscali walk - at the end of this quite technical and excellent trip walk why did we walk 1+ hour along a hot, open, dusty, hard road with cars coming past creating more dust? I do not see the point of walking along a road at the end of a walk when a vehicle could pick us up.
Last day - ferry (nice experience but most of us had already done this) to a beach and then walk in the forest along the cliffs. not very inspiring. few views. felt like a walk for the sake of it, must be better walks around.
A good mix of walking, site seeing and free time (however not many options on the free day).
Seeing the Pine Martin was the highlight of my trip in Tiscali & the Gorge walk.
Eric was really good, he got the pace just right for the group & everything was well organised. Good description of the walks terrain and so you knew what to expect.
Poles & boots are a must, the underfoot is quite rocky in parts, I felt it was an easy walk, it's the underfoot that makes it a Moderate. I'm not keen on heights, but there were no problems, as foot paths are quite wide and well marked. I didn't think the optional visit to the Grotta del Bue Marino, was worth the price (transfer to harbour/boat/entry), especially if you have seen cave systems before. However there isn't much to do on your free day otherwise. Take a kettle if you want hot drinks (not many staff around in the hotel), hairdryer can be provided at the hotel.
I think it would be good to be a 2 centre based trip so you get to see another part of Sardinia, as there is not much to do in your spare time in Dorgali.
Dorgali is a lovely small Italian town, very friendly, as is the family-run Hotel S'Adde. Great walking country, with mountains, excellent views, and ancient sites of the Nuraghi people.
Funnily enough, for me it was the view when we climbed to the top of the mountain above Dorgali, with clear views to the sea, and a long way inland too. Tiscali was a special site in its own way, but the first climb was the most rewarding.
Eric Woolley is a seasoned veteran of the outdoors, and the group was very safe in his hands. The first day's walking, he pushed us a bit, in order to get the measure of us, all the better to time the rest of the week's walks, which were timed almost perfectly. One slight criticism; Eric's Italian seemed somewhat scanty, but this didn't affect the trip at all, since one of our group was of Italian extraction, and was thus able to translate when having more complex conversations, and the rest of the time, the group had enough Italian to get by. Most of the hotel staff spoke English.
Be prepared to sample some excellent wines; the hotel "house red" was quite acceptable, and the local Cantonau Classico and Reserve were delicious. Not quite so sure about the local myrtle-based aperitif, "Mirto", though!
Being a vegetarian on southern european trips can be difficult at times, and I found myself being offered fish at least twice - luckily, I'm flexible, but others might not be so.
Overall, a decent week's rock-hopping, clambering, and walking, all in a pleasant climate, staying in a friendly and very pretty town.
For the lunch not included, you can expect to spend 10-15 Euros, depending on how many courses you choose. For evening meal not included, expect to spend approximately 25 Euros per person for a two-course meal, (excluding drinks). Some entrances to Nuraghic monuments are not included and will cost between 5-10 Euros each. Optional boat trip back to Dorgali (from Cala Luna) will cost approx. 20 Euros. This is not included due to unpredictable weather conditions.
ATMS can be found at the airport, and in Dorgali and Cala Gonone.

In Dorgali - the Blues Bar is a good alternative to the hotel bar and also doubles as an internet cafe. The Cafe La Plaza serves a decently priced selection of pasta dishes, salads, and main courses, and also has an impressive selection of flavoured teas and hot chocolates. You can also try the bar S'Udulu, which is slightly more upmarket and has slightly more expensive prices to go with it!.
In Cala Gonone - The Cala Luna Hotel Bar has wonderful and comfortable terrace overlooking the sea with a great selection of cocktails. The Sure Cru is a Cuban style bar/gelateria that offers ice cream, cocktails and some musical entertainment.
Finally, the La Favorita Hotel and Restaurant has excellent quality food and very good service - I highly recommend the crayfish spaghetti, expensive but worth it!

Lots! There are some delicious local honey and cheeses. Also keep an eye out for small cakes made of almonds, bottarga (fish eggs), mirto (local liqueur) and salsiccia (sausage). At dinner, you should try Fregola con arselle (home made pasta with clams), culurgiones (cheese and mint ravioli), porcedduand of course the local fresh fish!
What else? Porceddu (suckling pig), spaghetti alla bottarga (spaghetti with grey mullet eggs), culurjonis (rectangular type of Ravioli with a variety of fillings and sauces) and Sabadas al Miele (pastry fill with cheese and covered in honey).
In terms of drinks, Mirto (liquore made out of Mirto berries), Filu Feru (firewater will help you digest anything) and Cannonau Doc Vigna di Isalle (excellent smooth local red wine, just watch out, taste light but has 14% alcohol!).

With so much to see and do in the world we know how hard it is to settle just on one destination. That's why we have put together a handy guide of trips you are able to do back-to-back.
TES (Walking in Sardinia) can be combined with Walking the Amalfi Coast (TDA) but we recommend doing the Sardinia trip first in order for this to work. All the TES departures dates can be combined with TDA if both trips are guaranteed to run.
If you are interested in combining this trip, please check our trip notes, call us, email us or start a Live chat for further details.
