A private trip to Java and Bali for a family of three. A wonderful blend of cultural and geographic highlights of this diverse country!
The visit to Tirta Empul in Bali where we were able to participate in the purification bathing with the local people. We felt welcomed and it was very special to be part of this important Balinese Hindu ritual
We had wonderful leaders in Java and Bali. They did a great job of facilitating our trip, exposing us to the local culture and geography and providing enough, but not an overwhelming amount, of information about the activities and places we were seeing.
If possible, would recommend reversing the order of visit to the Bali Temples and go to Tirta Empul first and Gunung Kawi second. If possible, stay at the on site hotel in Borobudur and you must absolutely go on the sunrise visit to the temple. For the activities, if they ask you to get up early (i.e. 4:30AM, 5AM), do so, it is worth it!
The local exodus team was extremely helpful in troubleshooting delayed luggage arrival. They were flexible and accommodating of our needs including the dietary needs of one of our family (vegan)
The tour is called temples and volcanoes and it delivers that in spades. The sheer size, scale, beauty and power of nature coupled with the peace, spirituality and art and culture of these islands gave us a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting holiday.
really too many to mention but climbing above the clouds on Rinjani and arriving to view the volcano at sunset was moving.
fantastic. caring, helpful and informative. she ensured that the group gelled and she wasn't just our leader but our friend.
We use a regular scheduled service from Medan to Yogyakarta with Garuda Indonesia international airways.

The accommodation is mostly 2-3-star, but you should also be prepared for one night which is more basic on Mt Bromo where running water and electricity may be inconsistent, however bed linen and a towel is provided. Mosquito nets are not provided at all the accommodation used so taking one is recommended.

On average, a lunch should cost no more than £3 and dinner up to £10 including drinks. The standard and quality of the restaurants is very good while still retaining a traditional ambience. In the more remote locations, it's amazing how the local people can prepare such delicious meals!

Food is cheap in Indonesia and you can generally avoid the spicier dishes if you wish. Western food is available (if you're feeling homesick!) in Medan, Yogyakarta and Bali. Restaurants come in all shapes, colors and standards; expensive (restoran), standard (rumah makan) and simple (warung). Try some of the local rice wine as well, or an ice cold Bintang beer!
