A great trip for anyone who wants a "taster" of different cities and areas of Italy. Not relaxing as a lot of travelling between destinations but well worth it. Plenty of free time if you like to get out of the group. We saw so much and having an Italian leader meant we were lucky to have insider knowledge .
Lots of moments: flying into Venice; sampling cichetti and ombre; views of St Marks and Doge Palace from San Giorgio Maggiore; beauty of Lake Como; pesto class in Levanto; walk in Cinque Terre; cathedral in Florence at night; relaxing in agriturisimo in Assissi; fabulous Bernini and Caravaggio masterpieces at Gallerie Borghese in Rome; pizza in Naples; gelato everywhere.
Andrea Gambino was faultless. He was very knowledgeable, intelligent, patient, enthusiastic, great company, well organised and nothing was too much trouble. During free time he made sure everyone was comfortable being out of the group and helped us all with reservations, directions, etc. All the restaurants he took us to were reasonably priced and food was good and reflected region where we were at the time. All our travel by train was well thought out with no hiccups. I think everyone in our group really appreciated having Andrea as our leader and felt he greatly enhanced their enjoyment of the trip.
Pack as light as possible. Wheeled cases imperative as, although hotels are near to railway stations, some walking is unavoidable. There was always plenty of luggage space on trains.
In September there were a lot of mosquitos at agriturisimo so do take insect repellent.
Lots of free time but still not enough time to pack in everything so do have some ideas for activities in cities.
All hotels were clean and comfortable. The hotel in Venice was particularly quirky and a lovely start to the holiday. All food was excellent. Our group were all very sociable and we had a lot of fun.
All in all a great way to experience different areas of beautiful Italy.
A two week hectic but interesting visit to Italy, streching from Venice right down to Naples. Totally and utterly enjoyable. Meticulously organised, as always, by Exodus!
The visit to Rome and our optional visit to The Vatican were very inspirational.
Richard Purchon is a young lad and at first I didn't think much of him. However, he turned out to be an organised leader with a sense of humour.
Plan beforehand to use up your free days in Rome and Naples. We managed to organise a three hour private tour of The Vatican. We also managed to make use of our free day in Naples by going to Pompeii. Our leader Richard helped us to organise our free days but it does help to plan beforehand and have an idea of what you want to do.
I wish that Exodus had offered us an optional extension at the end so that we could have ended up in Capri, Sorrento or the Amalfi coast.
What a fantastic way to see some of the highlights of Italy! The accommodation was more than adequate throughout the trip, particularly surprising were the size of the rooms in the hotels we stayed in while in the main cities as i had expected little more than a shoe box, I was surprised to see another reviewer liken them to hostels as that was not my perception at all. The food was absolutely wonderful everywhere that we went and not nearly as expensive as I had imagined, mainly i think because our guide cleverly took us to places off the main squares/streets and advised us to order at the bar as it is cheaper than waiter service. Like any city break style holiday there was a lot of walking involved and the limited time in each major city meant we covered a lot of ground in a short space of time, because of this i would say this is a reasonably fast paced tour unless you just want to sit in a cafe and watch the world go by. The Cinque Terre walk was beautiful but fairly demanding due to the easier coastal paths having been closed for a number of years due to unsafe ground, however there is also a train which runs between each village that was very simple to navigate and included in your entrance ticket. My least enjoyable days were in Naples at the end of the tour. It was the one place where I didn't feel particularly safe and it is quite a grubby city. Definitely watch out for the pickpockets there!
Lake Como and Assisi were really beautiful countryside locations and Verona and Lucca were lovely picturesque quiet towns. The hotel at Lake Como had stunning views over the lake and a wonderful upper terrace that we sat on and enjoyed a glass of something cool at the end of the day. The highlight at Naples was a fantastic pizza place called L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele - its a very basic place where you will have to queue outside and the seating is on shared long tables, there's a tiny menu (2 pizzas and 3 drinks) and the pace is fast but the pizza was fantastic and it had a great bustling atmosphere! A brilliant experience! Oh and it also turned out that a scene from the film 'Eat Pray Love' was shot there.
He gave us some great insider tips of where to go and what to do, he successfully herded us on and off our trains making all of our connections and was generally unflappable! Top marks!
Most of the transfers between cities are via train so pack light and make sure you are able to lift your bags while quickly jumping on and off the trains!
The hotel we stayed in outside of the Cinque Terre is only a couple of minutes away from the crystal clear cool sea - ideal at the end of a long day of walking so I highly recommend packing your swim wear (its a pebble beach).
I'd recommend doing the wine tasting optional excursion in Assisi as it includes 5 courses of food and the hosts were really excellent, it was a lovely relaxing way to spend an afternoon for even the most unsophisticated palates such as my own!
We didn't feel the need to hire any guides in the main cities as the orientation tour from our tour leader was sufficient to point us in the direction of anywhere we wanted to go in our free time.
If you want to visit any of the attractions at the Vatican book well in advance (even before you get to Italy)!
