A week of high intensity fitness activities under the Moroccan sun

Join Exodus leader and personal trainer, Andy McKee, for a week of fitness with an Exodus twist. Beginning in the coastal town of Essaouira, this high intensity cardio week will see you burning fat and getting fit! Combining cardio sessions of strength and stamina focused circuits and boxercise, with cycling along the Atlantic coast, sunrise beach runs and abdominal workouts, you will see your core strength and fitness improve throughout the week. Our accommodation is a traditional Moorish riad just a short walk from the beach and its sunny roof top terrace is the perfect location for sunset stretch classes. The town itself offers several restaurants with delicious, healthy menus and there are a variety of spas and Hamman’s on hand to soothe any weary muscles. No trip to Morocco would be complete without time in Marrakech, and your active week will finish with two nights here. With a day trek in the foothills of the Atlas Panorama and further classes, this jam packed week will leave you feeling energised and with fond memories of this fascinating country.

  • Day 1

    Start Essaouira

    The trip starts at Maison du Sud hotel in Essaouira. Depending on your arrival time you can explore the town, take a walk along the beach front or relax on the sunny roof terrace. Late afternoon Andy will host a welcome meeting to discuss the week ahead, give advice on the local area and answer any questions. Our exercise will now begin with a gentle run along the wide sandy beach a sunset stretch and cool down session.

  • Day 2

    Introduction to boxercise, abdominal class and beach run

    Today we start early with a pre breakfast boxercise session concentrating on fat burning and agility. This exercise class is based on the training concepts boxers use to keep fit including moves such as shadow-boxing, hitting pads, skipping, shuttle runs and push ups. After a breakfast and a suitable amount of recovery time we move our attention to our abdominal muscles as Andy takes us through a structured routine aimed at building up our core strength and flattening and sculpting the mid-section. Our fitness for the day comes to a close with a sunset run along the beach.

  • Day 3

    Full day of coastal cycling

    A seaside city, Essaouira offers kilometres of coastline winding its way alongside the tumbling waves of the Atlantic. Following a short bus transfer to avoid the more busy areas of traffic in the centre of Essaouira, we hop on our bikes and head towards Sidi Kouki. This sleepy surfing village makes for a perfect pit stop for a refreshing drink, after which we pedal on to the small village of Taska. Here we have lunch before returning back towards Essaouira. 43km cycling (option to end ride in Taska after 27km). Once back at the hotel there will be a pre-dinner stretch session on the terrace to ensure that any post cycle muscles are thoroughly cooled down.

  • Day 4

    Morning intervals on the beach, afternoon circuits on the spacious roof terrace

    A heart pumping start to the day with interval training on the beach. Intervals include high intensity exercises with low-intensity recovery periods. These not only improve your fitness but also burn calories over a short amount of time than steady-state cardio (doing the same thing for a whole workout). Following a leisurely lunch with time to relax the pace will continue with late afternoon circuits on the roof terrace of our riad. As the sun sets and our cool down begins we will be able to hear the hypnotising ‘call to prayer’ echo across the rooftops.

  • Day 5

    Beach run, power walk and boxercise

    We are up early today for invigorating run along the beach. After breakfast we take a late morning power walk to the small village of Diabat for lunch. If the weather is good there is a swimming pool for us to enjoy a refreshing dip! Late afternoon we head return to our riad for our next high intensity boxercise class.

  • Day 6

    Early beach run before transferring back to Marrakech. Free time to enjoy the hotel pool before an abdominal class

    Following a pre breakfast beach run we pack our bags and take our private transfer back to Marrakech. Here we will check in to our comfortable countryside riad and have time to enjoy the outdoor swimming pool (weather dependent) before our final abdominal class of the week. Late afternoon we will head into the city centre to explore the infamous souks and enjoy dinner amongst the hustle and bustle.

  • Day 7

    Full daywalk in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains

    Today we lace up our boots to explore the Zat Valley. After driving for approximately 1hr 20 we start our trek from a collection of villages called Iguouranne. Our walk takes us through some beautiful undulating scenery dotted with flowers in Spring and snow-capped mountains in autumn. We will enjoy a picnic by the River Zat before descending back towards Tighdouinne for our transfer back to our hotel in Marrakech. Total distance 19km. Total hours walking 4.5hr – 5.5hr plus picnic and drink stops.

No visa required by British passport holders.



There are no mandatory vaccination requirements. Recommended vaccinations are: Tetanus, Typhoid and Hepatitis A.

Eating and Drinking

7 breakfasts, 2 lunches and 1 dinner is included.

Moroccan food is generally excellent. Breakfasts usually consist of bread and jam with coffee or tea. Meals eaten out are reasonably priced - kebab and bread cost only about £4 (approx. US$6.50). In Essaouira there are lots restaurants to choose from, all offering a variety of delicious and healthy food. . Generally dinner is likely to cost between £7-12 (approx. US$10-17) depending on what you choose to eat and drink. Local beers, wines and soft drinks are reasonably priced, but you can pay UK prices or more for imported alcohol. Your leader will recommend restaurants for each evening.

Vegetarians can be catered for without a problem. Please note that if you have any special dietary requirements you should inform the Exodus Office prior to the trip. If you have a specific medical/dietary need (i.e. coeliac or vegan) you may find it helpful to bring some items of food with you from home.



There is almost no rainfall in Essaouira from March through to October making it ideal for outdoor activities. Temperatures range between 20-30 degrees celsius from April through to November with the hottest month being August. Coastal winds help to keep the temperatures comfortable.

Is this trip for you?

This Moderate/Challenging week is for anyone looking to improve or maintain their fitness with a week of fun and carefully tailored fitness activities. You must already have a base level fitness (as a guide you should ideally be able to run a 5km distance under 35 minutes or go to the gym/cycle 2-3 times per week). Throughout the week you will be concentrating on strengthening and cardio with the objective of returning home feeling fitter and healthier. All activities are optional.

Although we have given a detailed itinerary please note that the running order of activities may be altered giving the leader the opportunity to ensure the best itinerary is offered and fits with local weather/events.

Riad Maison Sud & Riad Bledna

Riad Maison Sud *** (photographs of Maison du Sud)

5 nights are spent in this traditional 18th century riad. Located just 350 metres from the main beach of Essaouira it makes a great base for our fitness week. There is a large, sunny terrace with sea views, perfect for cardio classes and sunset stretching and facilities also include a restaurant, cafe and bar. All rooms are en suite, with hairdryers provided and most have a mezzanine level and separate seating area which opens up on to the bright patio. Wi-Fi is available in communal areas. 

Riad Bledna ***

We stay here for the final 2 nights of the trip. Located on the outskirts of Marrakech, the riad offers tranquillity away from the bustling centre. The riad is surrounded by beautiful gardens and offers an outdoor swimming pool and restaurant. Rooms are en suite and come equipped with air conditioning.

    Morocco Fitness Week

    This is a trip with lots of different activities designed to increase your fitness over the week with a group of like-minded people in two lovely environments with an inspiring group leader. It's an action packed week with running and interval sessions, boxercise, circuits, abdominal and stretching classes, walking in the hills, and cycling. The two centre bases worked well as each offered a different environment for the activities - Essaourira for the beach and Marrakesh for the lovely garden and pool. Apart from all the planned activities, there is a good amount of free time to explore the towns, shop in the souks (and barter if you like), soak in the local culture or just chill in the peace and quiet of the riads.

    What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    The variety of the activities made the trip great for me, so it's hard to pick out specific moments. However, these are a few selected highlights: Running on the beach and especially the dunes was great fun. I don't ride a bike so the cycling day was a new delight! Boxercise was a hard workout but such a good laugh! Essaourira is such a lovely town: hours spent just wandering around. The invitation to eat or lunch in our walking guide's home on our walk in the Atlas hills was special, very kind of Asis and his family.

    What did you think of your group leader?

    Andy was brilliant: a keen fitness enthusiast and caring group leader. He organised two or three different fitness activities each day, varying the exercises and pacing them to our ability levels. He made us work hard, but made everything such fun that sometimes you were hardly aware that you were exercising! He took into account any fitness niggles and offered individual advice and training routines to support any problems. Having worked in Morocco for many years he knew the country well: he could advise on all aspects of safety, the best restaurants, local food to try and places to visit to make the most of the country.

    Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    Purchase a steripen to sterilise tap water. Easy to use. Although Exodus try to keep plastic to a minimum by decanting from big bottles, the group consumed a large amount of water bought in plastic.

    Is there anything else you would like to add?

    If you enjoy fitness training across a wide variety of activities. Then add on a fascinating country, great people, good food and inspiring leader. I absolutely loved it.

    Morocco fitness trip

    Great week running and exercising on the beach at Essaouira up and down the sand dunes with the camels in the distance! A dip in the wavey Atlantic revealed the sea to be much warmer than Cornwall! Rooftop circuits and stretching added variety and relaxation. Marrakesh location a calm beautiful oasis, great gardens. Loved the exercising in an exotic location!

    What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    Our Guide Aziz took us into his family home to offer us some mint tea and bread and olive oil. I felt very honoured and humbled to be accepted into his family home as a stranger and welcomed so hospitably 😀

    What did you think of your group leader?

    Andy was an excellent tour guide calm and keen with a great exercise program and open to suggestions.

    Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    Many restaurants are unlicensed so I’d advise warning about this.

    Is there anything else you would like to add?

    Riad in Essaouira beautiful and hospitable but first floor rooms very damp. Andy brought his wife and friend and daughter with him which slightly distracted his attention to the group. However his family and friend were delightful!

Dates & Prices

An overview of flight options

Exodus is committed to making joining our tours as easy as possible, wherever you live. We generally only block book seats from London, but this certainly does not mean that you need to fly from there. Depending on the route and airlines available, there will usually be various options available for those who want to fly from their local airport.

This page aims to provide a useful overview of the options available to our clients. However, the best flight arrangements should be tailored to your personal requirements, so please contact our Sales team for expert advice.


What kind of options do I have ?

1. We can book for you: Flights from anywhere in the world - not via London  

Depending on the route, this may be direct or via an overseas hub like Amsterdam, the Middle East or elsewhere. On short haul routes there may be direct flights with low cost airlines, charter flights or scheduled airlines. Exodus can book most, but not all, of these for you. The most appropriate airline may be different to that which we use for the group flight from London, but many people now travel on different airlines and meet up with their fellow passengers at the destination.

Pros Cons
  • May be the most direct route
  • Often the extra fare compared to the London flight is minimal.
  • As you will be in the hands a single airline for your entire journey, the airline will be responsible for your bags and your connections.
  • You may not be able to join the group transfers. However, we can usually arrange private transfers, or book your flights to try and coincide with the group transfers. See notes on transfer arrangements below.


2. We can book for you: Connecting flights from your local airport to London

Exodus can book connecting flights to London so you can join the group flight there. Connecting times will be followed according to airline advice, or as requested by clients. There are two types of fares we can use for this option: a 'through-fare' or a 'published fare'.
a) A 'through-fare' is where you will be in the main airline's care throughout. You change planes, but your bags are checked all the way through to your final destination. 

b) A 'published fare' ticket is completely seperate from your onward ticket from London. It is usually cheaper than a through-fare but will need to be paid for and issued as soon as it is booked. This can be a problem if your tour has not yet reached minimum numbers. On 'published fares' neither airline is aware that you have connecting flights, so Exodus is responsible for timing your connection, not the airlines involved. The tickets are also usually non changeable and non refundable.

Pros Cons
  • Depending on the fare type, Exodus or the airline is responsible for flight connections.
  • Through fare tickets can be expensive.
  • On a published fare, tickets must be issued immediately; tickets on published fares can be very difficult to change if onward flight times change; bags are not checked though to your final destination.
  • Published fares are non-refundable.


3. Booking some or all of the flights yourself

You can also book connecting air travel yourself, either to London, or all the way to the start point. There may be certain airlines or routes we don't have access to, so this is always an option. However, if you make your own travel arrangements you become liable for any delays, cancellations or missed connections, and Exodus is not required to offer refunds if you have trouble reaching the start of your trip.

Pros Cons
  • You might find cheaper fares, or routes not available to Exodus.
  • You are responsible for any delays or missed connections, and the cost of the tour is not protected should you miss your flight be cancelled.


 Notes on transfer arrangements

Sometimes it is possible to travel on a different airline to the group flight from London. Where this is the case, we need to think about ensuring you meet up with the group with minimum extra cost and hassle.

  • On certain trips, it is easy to arrive on a different flight and still meet the group at the hotel with time in hand. We can usually arrange private transfers (at extra cost) or offer advice on taking a taxi to the start hotel.
  • On other trips (especially in Europe), the transfer meets the group flight and then travels some distance to the first night's accommodation. Where this is the case, our Sales team will try to arrange flights that arrive before (and depart after) the group. However, we do have to make it clear in your final documentation that if your flights are delayed, the transfer cannot wait for you. While Exodus or our local operators will do what we can to help you reach the start point of the tour, any additional costs must be paid by the client.
