Peru Walking & Trekking Holidays

  • Trekkers approaching Machu Picchu

The Inca Empire made its home in the Andes and it is often said that Peru (and Bolivia) has a unique fusion of history and natural environment. For mountain lovers it is in every sense comparable with the Himalayas, but in addition it has an unrivalled historical impact that sets it aside from any other mountainous area in the world.

The Inca Trail is a ‘must’ for any walker and is the most famous trek in South America.
It was constructed as a highway connecting Cuzco with the lost city of Machu Picchu. The original trail has been carefully and comprehensively restored, and although it can be quite busy at times, it is unquestionably the most rewarding way to arrive at Machu Picchu, passing through wonderful mountain landscapes of Amazonian cloud forest and snow-capped Andean peaks. Though it is more than just a simple stroll, it should be within the capability of anyone who is in good health and fitness, and the rewards certainly justify the physical effort.

For a sneak preview of the delights of the Inca Trail, see our Google Earth video by clicking here:

If you do find that permits are no longer available for your chosen dates then take a look at our alternative Inca Trail trek - The Moonstone Trek.

This takes a higher route, well off the tourist path and offers remote walking past several recently discovered Inca and pre-Inca archaeological sites. And you still visit Machu Picchu at the end of the trek!
