A proper polar voyage requires a ship which is up to task. Exodus has a superb range of small expedition ships (approx. 100 passengers) well qualified for Antarctic waters. They are quiet and unobtrusive to wildlife, with an exceptional staff/passenger ratio and offer at least two zodiac landings a day (conditions permitting). Here is a breakdown of the fleet, a battle of the ships designed to help you choose the right vessel for your ultimate expedition.
Exodus Score: 9/10 - Winner
The undisputed ‘Queen of Polar Expedition Cruising’. Her only negative is that some of the less expensive cabins have shared bathroom facilities.
Expert opinion: Paul Goldstein
“Exodus maritime clientele return to the decks of this Finnish built ex-research vessel year after year. Quiet and purposeful it is the ideal platform for grown-up exploration. If you want teak and marble furnishings and piano lounges look elsewhere. If you want a genuine expedition ship this is the one. I have spent seven months of my life on board this vessel yet still feel like a nautical novice.”
Exodus Score: 8/10
Classic small ship polar adventure cruising. What it lacks in a panoramic bar it makes up for in great outdoor spaces.
Expert opinion: Cat Griffin
“A comfortable expedition ship benefiting from a $13 million conversion in 1998. Cabins and communal areas are spread over 5 decks with plenty of access to outside space. It has a well stocked bar and a dining room with wonderful panoramic views while you dine.”
Antarctic Explorer - 12 days from £4000
Exodus Score: 8/10
Small, intimate and stylish - however that shallow draught can make for an interesting Drake Passage crossing when seas are rough.
Expert opinion: Ben Roseveare
“What memories of the panoramic lounge and viewing deck! Five magical days were spent in the South Shetland Islands and channels of the Antarctic Peninsula aboard the Ocean Nova. Our smallest and most intimate ship, her 3.4m draught allows her to approach really close to the landings. It takes just 20 minutes to have everyone in the Zodiacs and out there exploring.”
Exodus Score: To Be Confirmed
The newest addition to our fleet but we think the combination of extreme comfort and expedition is going to be a potent one. Watch this space!
Expert opinion: Louisa Richardson
“The Sea Spirit has all the excitement of an intrepid polar expedition combined with extreme comfort and fine dining. From the cosy club lounge, complete with bar, piano and library, to the top notch dining room, every part of the interior oozes opulent style. Outside there is ample space for wildlife viewing.”
