South India Explored

Southern India Explored - Incredible!

5
A fantastic first venture into India - all the sounds, sights and smells you can imagine (mostly good and a few bad!). There is a lot of travelling, but the small coach was comfortable and plenty of room. (24 seater for 16 plus guide). There are plenty of temples, palaces and shrines but also views of everday life for the locals. It is much greener than I expected - acres of paddy fields, miles of coconut trees and hillsides of tea - all very green and so well tended. The new trip to the bird sanctuary was great as we had a bonus view of paddy fields in all stages of growing. there were men making bundles of rice seedlings from the seed beds, others taking the bundles to the fields for the ladies to plant. There was a pair of oxen flattening the mud ready for planting and more workers spreading the fields with fertilizer. Best photo opportunity you could hope for of this. Bird wise, we saw thousands of nesting birds - pelicans, painted storks, open billed storks grey herons, pond herons and I think purple herons. Right at the end of the visit a guide showed us a pair of small owls well camouflaged in a tree. We were welcomed by the locals everywhere we went, to the extent that they wanted our photo as much as we wanted theirs!
