I've trekked before and was under no illusion about the challenge ahead. Nevertheless, the last 24hrs to the summit was tougher than I was expecting. But the combination of a fantastic local crew and teamwork from the trekkers meant the whole experience was enjoyable and I stood at Uhuru Peak in the glorious morning sun regretting nothing.
Everything was organised extremely well, from being met at the airport for our overnight stay at Kia Lodge before the other group members arrived the following day to having our own toilet tent in the camp sites! I still can't believe that one of the porters carried that all the way up and down the mountain. All the porters who helped around the campsite were friendly and well trained. The food was varied and plentiful.
Although climbing Kili has become a typical 'charity' trek. You have to do it to know how wonderful and awesome it is to summit this bad boy. It is no easy 'red nose' saunter and still one of my proudest moments to date.
Excellent advice and guidance before and after booking from Exodus staff who had clearly been there and knew the trip. Everyone from the African Walking Company deserves the highest praise: hard working, cheerful and encouraging. In addition the equipment I hired was top class.
