The Serengeti National Park is home for some of the year to the largest concentration of migrating plains game in the world. Estimates indicate that there are up to 2 million wildebeest, 1 million gazelle, and 200,000 zebra, as well as large numbers of elephant and a wonderful selection of bird life. Lions are easily seen and in large numbers - there are around two thousand within the park. The terrain varies from treeless plains to stretches of savannah dotted with flat-topped acacia trees. Granite rock outcrops, known as 'kopjes', blend with riverine bush and thick scrub in the area around the Seronera River. The migration, however, does add considerable extra interest. The migrating animals (wildebeest, gazelle and zebra) start returning to the southern and central plains of Serengeti in November. The wildebeest breeding season is in January and February, then there is the beginning of the move north between April and June to the north and west of Serengeti. From July to October the animals move further north to the Masai Mara in Kenya.
