The holiday was a great success! We had a perfect mix of relaxing on quiet beaches, activities such as cycling and sailing and cultural pursuits visiting ancient archaeological sites. Starting and ending in Athens gave us the chance to see city life and experience the buzz of this amazing city with it's heart of the Acropolis and the vibrant Plaka area. Porto Cheli is a charming seaside town and Spetses a beautiful car free island. I would recommend this trip whole heartedly to all those who want to experience the real Greece away from the more touristy islands.
Difficult to pick the most inspirational moment out....looking up at the floodlit Acropolis from a rooftop restaurant on our first night, swimming in crystal clear blue seas....but I guess the most inspirational moment was at the magnificent amphitheatre at Epidauros. We visited during the day en route to Porto Cheli from Athens and then Angelos, our brilliant group leader, arranged tickets for us all to go and see a performance of The Frogs by Aristophanes one evening (in Greek but still an amazing spectacle). This was an unforgettable experience as the sun set and the lights came up, with 10,000 in the audience. Absolutely magical!
Our group leader, Angelos, was brilliant from the moment we first met him at Athens Airport to when we said a sad goodbye at the end of the week. He organised us in a relaxed and friendly way, always checking that we were happy with our day ahead. He has a lovely sense of humour and always went the extra mile to make our week as full as we wanted it to be. Angelos had a great knowledge of Athens and showed us the main sights. Angelos really appreciated our interest in Greek culture and mixed this up with plenty of beach time, swimming and fab restaurants. Angelos really made the holiday, he was great with the kids too and always made sure that we were getting the most from our time. A very nice person too!
Be prepared for high temperatures and take lots of water on every day trip. The archaeological sites are often quite exposed so wide brimmed hats are essential. Take snorkelling gear as these proved great fun at the beaches that we visited. This is a perfect holiday for those that like a mixture of culture and beach visiting! The food was great throughout so should appeal to all age groups. Don't be too ambitious with the cycling around Spetses, even at 5:30pm when we started, it was still very hot and unless you are quite fit and keen cyclists you might find it a bit hard work, especially the hills. It would be easy to do a shorter route and if Angelos is running future trips (which I hope he is) I am sure that he would be happy to organise that.
The hotel in Porto Cheli did not have a pool but this didn't make a lot of difference as we visited beaches in the local area and once we got back to the hotel we had quite quick turnarounds to go back out to eat...we didn't have time to lounge around by a pool anyway! The local beaches at Porto Cheli and Spetses were mainly used by Greek people, we rarely saw other foreign tourists, which added to the feeling that we were seeing the 'real' Greece. This applied to the theatre at Epidauros and the restaurants that where we ate too. My 13 year old daughter and I loved the holiday.
