Dobbiaco 21/02/2015 x/c ski

5
Superb conditions and leadership by Anne, Alex, and Lorraine at what I think is your best southern European x/c ski base. Exodus is the only UK Company which does properly-led daylong x/c ski - unlike your competitors such as Ramblers, which treat x/c as downhill skiing (which it definitely isn't!) It's a great shame, therefore, that Exodus does not offer more southern European venues for x/c ski, having drastically reduced these following acquisition of Waymark I hear this complaint again and again from fellow Exodus x/c skiers. And we all fear that exodus will allow this activity to wither on the vine if it is not careful. X/c ski is superb outdoor activity which should be promoted as the ideal winter fitness activity - it also has some Royal patronage - Pippa Middleton did an x/c ski race last year! One other thing - you specify that grade 1 and 2 are suitable for people with little or no experience. But you should make it clear that a level of fitness similar to regular hill walking or cycling is necessary. I have seen so many people have a ruined experience of x/c ski simply because they don't do sufficient regular exercise, and that causes such difficulties for the Leaders, and, indeed, the other suitably fit participants who have to hang back or stop all the time so that these people can catch up!

Dobbiaco cross-country skiing and more

Good, reliable skiing. Even when snow is thin there's always something, and this season conditions were more than adequate - I could finally reach the Cortina cross-country centre (I've been waiting since 1988 to get there).

South Tyrol and the Dolomites are a must see, Mahler was here and so was the 1914-18 war. Hotel excellent and Guides struck just the right tone. The number of guests returning is testament to the quality of the Exodus experience here. Go see it before it is spoiled by mass tourism.

Dobbiaco cross country skiing

This resort is excellent for beginners and improvers. The integrated and impressive public transport system ,with our local pass, gave us access to a good variety of terrain, within stunning mountain settings. Having grade 1 and 2 running the same week together gave me confidence I would get training and challenges I could cope with. Older people who are reasonably fit from taking good walks should not be afraid to try this sport. The new spa at the Turchsentaler Hotel has been fitted out to a high standard and is a delightful place to easy away aches and pains and relax before dinner.

Cross country skiing in Dobiacco

3
This is the 7 th time we have done cross country skiing in Dobiacco, as we love the Dolomite scenery and the extensive choice of trails. Unfortunately this time there was no snow in Dobiacco! However, our leader had researched available areas of snow for us, so we were able to ski every day.

A location which I have visited into double figures ! This was the first time there was no snow on the small town on arrival . Despite this , we were able to ski every day thanks to the tremendous work that had been done to line many kilometres of loipe with manmade snow . Additionally we were able to visit new "pastures " to vary our skiing experiences .

Cross country skiing, Dobbiaco

This was my 6th trip to Dobbiaco in January and the first with very little snow. Thanks to research by our leader prior to the trip and impressive efforts by the locals to create and extend loipes, we were able to enjoy a full week's programme of skiing.
